Another week, another event – Sunday 16th February saw the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAS) take place in London at The Royal Opera House. There were some fabulous dresses on show but as always with StyleRocks, we’re more interested in the jewellery
The standout pieces that follow are really interesting in that there was no one unifying theme of who wore them: young and old, British and English, the ‘grande dame’ and the newcomer. It doesn’t matter what age and stage of your life you are, you wear it – it doesn’t wear you; and all the actresses below knew just how to wear it.
Helen Mirren wearing Asprey earrings
Well, firstly let us all pay homage to THE grande dame of British screen and TV, Dame Helen Mirren. Looking Fab-u-lous! Here we see her wearing amazing diamond earrings from that most British of establishments, Asprey. Founded in 1781, Asprey is a venerable institution selling all manner of items appropriate for the finer things in life. Found on Old Bond Street, Asprey in fact used to be a happy hunting ground and indeed, Mr StyleRocks is lucky enough to have a couple of pairs of Asprey cufflinks.
Back to the topic at hand: these Asprey diamond earrings totalling 7.31cts, set in white gold, are part of Asprey’s new diamond collection, the ‘Storm‘ Collection. Let’s take a closer look at the earrings:
In a word – WOW! The craftsmanship on these earrings is just incredible. To maintain that structure, while balancing the weight created from the diamonds -and not to tear her earlobes off – is incredible. Naturally, these earrings are POR: Price On Request if you’ve found a cool couple of million stashed down the back of your sofa.
Lily Allen wearing diamond hoops
Now to the other end of the spectrum; we have Lily Allen. This author has long held a love-hate relationship with Ms Allen: love to hate her songs but they’re just so damn catchy! Living in London when Lily burst on to the music scene, her style was about pouffy dresses, hi-top sneakers and big hoop earrings – very ‘chav’ in style. And here we see that not much has changed in the last 10 years!
But at least here the hoops have diamonds! So Lily is same-same, but different. And that thing behind her is in fact a pink hairpiece. So it’s definitely her own twist on grown-up awards style.
Lupita N’yongo wearing Ana Khouri
Ah, just can’t get enough of this actress! As keen readers would note, we have a MAJOR style crush on her – you can check out our Golden Globes celebrity jewelry post here. And once again, she has pulled it off, wearing the most remarkable Christian Dior emerald gown. Boy does she have a knack for pulling off column dresses in jewel colours (perhaps that’s why we love her so much!)
The gold cuffs are by Ana Khouri, a Brazilian designer, who describes her pieces as works of art. Particularly, she says of her technique “I like to see how the work evolves. It’s not about a ring or an earring; it’s about melding the form of the body with the form of the jewelry.”
In Lupita’s case, the cuffs do meld perfectly with the body – but do they remind you of Wonder Woman too?
Cate Blanchett wearing Chopard
And now for a home-grown (Australian) hero, Cate Blanchett. Let’s look at her red-carpet style, wearing (an unusually conservative) Versace dress.
And now for a close-up of that amazing necklace which chimes perfectly with the dress, thanks to TheJewelleryEditor:
By Chopard, this diamond necklace featuring 3 birds is nothing short of amazing. Can’t even begin to imagine how much this must have weighed – and the hours of labour that would have gone into it.
Finally, Angelina Jolie
Ms Jolie has long been a favourite on the StyleRocks celebrity jewellery wrap-ups. At this particular event, she opted for a comparatively low-key super sleek YSL tuxedo…but her accessory of choice was her best: Mr Brad Pitt. (We couldn’t resist!)
Whose jewellery did you like best?
